Statutory Regulation

The Health Professions Council (HPC) register of practitioner psychologists is now open and the standards of entry as well as the titles subject to statutory regulation have been published.

There are 7 protected psychologist tittles, including ‘Health Psychologist’ and two generic titles:

(a) registered psychologist and

(b) practitioner psychologist.

As of July 1st 2009 only those registered with the HPC are now entitled to use any of the above titles. Those DHP members who are eligible for an automatic transfer to the HPC register will have received a letter from the HPC outlining details of this procedure, the deadline of which is the 31st of October 2009. Those who wish to use the protected title of Health Psychologist are encouraged to make this deadline.

The routes to HPC registration for Health Psychology remain the same as those previously in operation (i.e. an accredited Masters course - Stage 1, followed by an accredited Stage 2 training - either university based or through the BPS). The Stage 2 courses will be subject to HPC accreditation.
